The pleura are two thin membranes that are moist surrounding the lungs that allow your lungs to expand and contract. Pleural effusion is a buildup of excess fluid in the space between the two pleura. The fluid makes it hard to breathe because it prevents the lungs from expanding and contracting properly.

Pleural Effusion is normally caused by injury to the chest and certain cancers, pulmonary diseases such as pneumonia, as well as chronic diseases of the heart, liver, pancreas and immune system or certain medications.

While certain types of pleural effusion do not cause symptoms, it is important to call Dr. Altus if you are experiencing:
